High-Strength Stainless Steel Alloys Product Portfolio
17-4PH Stainless Steel ( Type 630 )
17-4PH Stainless Steel ( Type 630 ) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that offers an exceptional balance of strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. This alloy can be age-hardened using a single-step, low-temperature process to meet specific application requirements. It is commonly used in environments requiring high tensile strength and moderate corrosion resistance.
Chemical Composition
This alloy typically contains 15–17.5% chromium, 3–5% nickel, 3–5% copper, and small additions of niobium or tantalum to improve stability during heat treatment.
Mechanical Properties
-
Tensile Strength: Up to 140 ksi (965 MPa)
-
Yield Strength: Approximately 100 ksi (690 MPa)
-
Hardness Range: 28–44 HRC (depending on heat treatment)
Corrosion Resistance
Offers moderate resistance to corrosion and excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance, making it suitable for moderately corrosive environments such as marine and chemical exposure.
Heat Treatment
Typically aged at approximately 900°F (482°C) for 1 hour in a single-step process. This heat treatment allows tailoring of strength and hardness to meet specific application requirements.
Applications
-
Aerospace fasteners and structural components
-
Chemical processing equipment
-
Marine hardware
-
Pumps, valves, shafts
-
Medical instruments requiring strength and corrosion resistance
15-5PH Stainless Steel Vac Melt (XM-12)
15-5PH Stainless Steel Vac Melt (XM-12) is a high-strength stainless steel that shares many characteristics with 17-4PH but provides superior toughness and corrosion resistance. It can be age-hardened to achieve specific strength levels while maintaining good ductility and machinability.
Chemical Composition
Contains approximately 15% chromium, 4–5% nickel, 3–5% copper, and small amounts of niobium or tantalum, refined through vacuum melting for improved cleanliness and toughness.
Mechanical Properties
-
Tensile Strength: 120–150 ksi (827–1034 MPa)
-
Yield Strength: 100–130 ksi (690–896 MPa)
-
Hardness Range: 30–45 HRC depending on heat treatment conditions
Corrosion Resistance
Provides improved corrosion resistance over 17-4PH, especially in chloride and acidic environments, making it suitable for chemical processing and marine applications.
Heat Treatment
Age hardened typically between 900°F and 1050°F (482°C–566°C) for 1–4 hours, allowing a balance between high strength and ductility tailored to application needs.
Applications
-
Aerospace structural and engine components
-
Chemical and petrochemical equipment
-
High-strength springs and fasteners
-
Marine hardware and valves
-
Medical and surgical instruments
